Planning for the Holidays
Planning for holiday travel or activities with loved ones who are ill or have a chronic disease can be stressful, but it doesn't have to be overwhelming. Many of our clients are able to travel with or without their loved ones during this busy season, and we are proud to help you plan for success either way.
Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you enter the holiday season:
1. Traveling with your loved one who suffers from Alzheimer's or Dementia may not be realistic without a strong medical plan and access to quality healthcare while on vacation. Keep this in mind and plan ahead. Perhaps finding a Kind Companion to stay with your relative while you travel is more realistic for your loved one. Each family has unique needs and expectations, so be sure to discuss your ideas and questions with your loved one's doctor or primary provider.
2. Medications need extra attention before traveling. Make sure to refill those that are soon expiring and talk to your loved one's doctor about any emergency or back-up medications that may be needed. Keep all medications together and properly labeled, to prevent any confusion. If flying, be sure to keep all medications in your carry-on bag, just in case luggage is delayed or lost. These often cannot be replaced quickly and easily.
3. Be realistic about traditions and reactions. Whether it's your loved one with Dementia who may not understand the holiday plans and activities, or the other relatives who may not understand how to cope with changes in your loved one's behavior during the holidays. Be prepared for all reactions, both positive and negative, and limit expectations. The holidays can be stressful for most families, let alone those dealing with illness, grief, change, etc.
4. Gift giving may be confusing for your loved one with Alzheimer's or Dementia. Pictures and picture albums can be great gifts, and handmade treasures are always appreciated. Try not to take it personally if their reaction to your gift isn't what you expected.
