4 Tips to Prevent Falls for Seniors at Home

Writer's picture: Kind CompanionsKind Companions

As with most of our beloved clients, our desire is to keep our aging parents and grandparents at home as long as possible. That's often why our Kind Companions will step in to provide some gap coverage for family caregivers who cannot commit to 24 hour care consistently. But having our loved ones at home can often result in unexpected slips or falls, if we don't take the proper precautions.

Here are 4 ways you can help prevent a fall for your loved one:

1. Add Additional Lighting

It may seem simple, but just adding a few nightlights or lamps throughout your loved one's home may help prevent unnecessary falls. Make sure hallways are illuminated at night, especially the pathway to the bathroom.

2. Provide No-Slip Shoes

Shoes have come a long way in the past few years, and they now make several 'no-slip' styles that are comfortable and easy to get on and off. Encourage your loved one not to walk around in socks or slippers that do not have a rubber sole, as they tend to slip. Be sure to add non-slip mats in the shower or find a small shower chair.

3. Clear the Clutter

Often times falls can be prevented simply by cleaning up a bit. Clutter can pile up anywhere, making doorways harder to enter or hallways less accessible. Try to organize and clean it out as often as possible. Always check for loose electrical cords or phone cards and try to minimize those throughout the home.

4. Use Assistance Devices

There are so many options now with life alert necklaces and devices that can be placed throughout the home. You may also consider a cell phone for your senior for emergencies if they don't already have one. You may also reach out to your friendlier neighbors and ask them if they don't mind being on a call list to check on your loved one.

Preventing falls doesn't have to feel like an impossible task. Reach out to our experienced Kind Companions for assistance. We can provide a free consultation and even offer additional ideas to make the home safer for your loved ones.
