How to Choose a Senior Living Facility

Sometimes the best decision for our elderly parents and grandparents is to consider a senior living or assisted living facility. Nursing homes may often be the first thing that comes to mind, but there are so many other options now, from personal care homes to retirement communities. Many offer different services from memory care to assistance with daily living activities.

Here are a few questions to keep in mind as you are touring the various facilities:

  1. Are the buildings both well-maintained and clean? Ask if you can tour an actual resident's room to see for yourself.

  2. Are there therapy and rehabilitation services offered onsite?

  3. Do residents seem cared for and genuinely happy? If you are able to talk to them, ask them.

  4. What is the system for reporting suspected cases of abuse?

  5. Does the company run background checks for all employees?

  6. How's the food? Does it seem both nutritious and delicious? Ask to sample a meal.

  7. Overall, does the facility seem secure? What systems are in place to protect residents with dementia from wandering off the property?

  8. Do they provide transportation to and from doctor's appointments?

  9. Are there doctors available on site?

  10. Are there licensed nurses or medical staff present 24 hours? Or at night?

  11. Is the facility licensed by the state?

  12. Is the staff helpful and polite? Do they answer questions without appearing defensive?

  13. Are there reviews of the company online? Be sure to read all positive and negative reviews.

  14. What type of procedures are in place for emergencies? (emergency call buttons, etc.)
